How to avoid Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is something that a lot of people struggle with. It is remarkably easy to get yourself into so much trouble with credit card debt that you have no hope of getting out of it. However with a few basic rules and a little bit of commonsense there is no reason why this needs to be the case. There are several things that you can do to help you avoid credit card debt.

This is something that gets a lot of people into trouble. Your credit card makes it easy to spend more than you can afford. Just because you have room on your credit card before you hit your limit doesn't mean that you can actually afford to spend that much. You need to have a budget and stick to it so that you don't run up more debt than you can afford.

One of the reasons that people frequently run up more debt than they can afford is that they use their credit cards for day to day purchases. This is not really what credit cards are for. They are supposed to be used for major purchases. The problem with using your credit on things like meals is that it is easy to lose track of how much you are spending. It is also not a good idea to be borrowing money to pay for your basic day to day needs. These are things that should be paid for with cash.

It goes without saying that you need to make sure that you pay your credit card bill each month; that's a pre-emptive credit card debt solution. Ideally you should be paying off your bill in full every month. While this may not be possible every month it should be your goal. The worst thing that you can do is pay the minimum each month. The minimum payment is designed to keep you in debt for as long as possible. If you want to stay out of debt you have to pay more than this. Missing payments of course should be avoided at all costs.

It is also a good idea to limit how much credit you actually have. Just because you qualify for a new credit card doesn't mean that you should take one. You really only need a couple of credit cards, having more than that is asking for trouble. The same is true with your credit limit; you don't want to raise that to high. The more credit that you have available the more debt you will be able to run up. This will often lead people to put more on their credit card than they should. This is a recipe for disaster and it is something that you need to avoid.
